Numbers, from 0 to 9, are inherently connected-a system of symbols that builds upon itself, yet remains abstract. In this project, we’ve taken each number and broken it down, reconstructing new shapes and forms, layer by layer. These reimagined forms resemble their origins, yet become something unfamiliar-recognizable, but transformed. This process mirrors the way currencies like the pound or dollar are based on abstract systems, yet are given tangible meaning in the world.

We’ve repeated this process hundreds of times, creating unique records of these sequences, much like the ongoing redefinition of value in currencies. Just as numbers don’t have a physical existence-they live only as symbols in our minds-so too do currencies. The value we assign to them is constructed, existing only in context, yet we give them real-world weight and significance. Iknow, go and tell that to a poor starving child and. see the real world significance of not having any money.

This exploration has formed the foundation of our attempt to actualise these numbers through physical materials like paint and wood. In much the same way that we bring value to currency by assigning it meaning, we bring numbers into the physical world, though they exist only as abstractions. Whether as numbers or as symbols of currency, this work explores how we attempt to make the abstract tangible-constructing meaning from systems that exist primarily in our minds.
