Why You Should Visit

Theme and Concept:
The exhibition is all about Kandinsky, a Russian-born artist whose work was deeply influenced by the turbulent times he lived in. Kandinsky’s journey through France, Germany, and Russia is beautifully showcased through his art, offering a glimpse into his life and evolution as an artist and how he changed the way that we all now see the world.

Layout and Design:
The exhibition is spread over two floors. What’s super cool is how the layout itself feels like stepping into one of Kandinsky’s paintings. From the shapes of the walls to the colours of the floors, everything is designed to immerse you in his world as if youre now looing through his glasses. Looking down from the second floor, it impossible not to see the intricate design that echoes Kandinsky’s unique style. something that cant be appreciated from the ground floor.

Artworks
There are about 60 of Kandinsky’s paintings, most of which come from the Pompidou Center in Paris. Some of the key pieces include “Picture with a Black Arch,” “On White 2,” “Reciprocal Accords,” and “Akhtyrka: Nina and Tatiana on the Veranda.” There are also some lesser-known early landscapes and early abstract abstract works.

Interactive Elements:
One of the most interesting parts of the exhibition is a video installation featuring a virtual Kandinsky who guides you through the exhibition. It’s a bit surprising to hear him speak English with a Dutch accent, but it’s a fantastic way to learn more about this Russian artist that spent most of his time in Germany and France. Annabelle Birnie, the museum director, and Angela Lampe, the curator of modern art at the Pompidou Center, have provided amazing insights into Kandinsky’s life and work. Their quotes and context make the exhibition even more engaging.

Visitor Experience

Atmosphere:
The exhibition was busy but not overcrowded, making it easy to enjoy and appreciate the art. The vibe was relaxed and enjoyable-perfect for a summer day out.

Personal Impressions

Highlights:
The exhibition features an incredible collection from the Pompidou, showcasing Kandinsky’s evolution as an artist. A standout moment for me was seeing “Reciprocal Accords,” which was displayed at Kandinsky’s funeral. Another favourite was the reconstruction of “Salon,” a 1922 work that was destroyed but later brought back to life under the guidance of Kandinsky’s wife. The relief descriptions of Capricious paintings were also mind-blowing.

Challenges:
One thing that was missing was more information about Kandinsky’s relationship with Gabriele Münter. It would have added an extra layer of depth to his story and works.

Overall Experience:
This exhibition does a fantastic job of humansing Kandinsky by telling his life story through his art. It’s a rare chance to see some of his most significant masterpieces and understand his artistic journey.
