Discovering Malawi: A Hidden Gem at Mount Mulanje
After a series of bus rides, we finally arrived in Lilongwe, Malawi. Intercity travel in Malawi is a slow process, not just because of the long distances, but also due to the shared roads that accommodate everything from pedestrians to large trucks. Some days, I find solace in the rhythm of the road and the clattering buses; other days, my bones rattle, and restlessness creeps in-not from a desire for better roads, but from the realization that I’ve been moving too fast. Back-to-back day buses and a restless night bus can unsettle even the most seasoned traveler.

Arriving in Lilongwe after sunset, I checked into the male dorm of my hostel and grabbed a quick dinner with Paula. She’s caught me up since our paths diverged at the Botswana border with Zambia. Armed with only minimal knowledge of Malawi beyond its famous lake, I was intrigued by a note on the hostel’s notice board. The message read:
“Strictly on a need-to-know basis. ABSOLUTELY in capital letters. Use this contact if you want to see the most incredible night sky from Malawi’s best-kept secret, aka the Roof of Central Africa. P.S. Ask for Simon when making contact.”
The note continued:
“Bring water, food, and warm clothes. You will be tired, but I assure you, you will not regret making the call to visit Mount Mulanje. Enjoy.”

Such notes are rare. My travels have taught me that the best advice often comes from casual conversations over beers, but this was different. It felt more like a treasure map than a simple notice. Without hesitation, we contacted Simon, packed our bags, prepared some food, and bundled up in warm clothes as we set off south towards Mount Mulanje-the highest peak in Malawi and Central Africa, standing tall at 3,000 meters.

Were we disappointed? Absolutely not. The experience was unforgettable. The only thing I regret is not having Simon’s contact details to share. Mount Mulanje truly lived up to its reputation, offering a breathtaking view and a serene night sky that made every effort worthwhile.
