Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals” by Oliver Burkeman is a refreshing take on the challenge of managing our time in today’s fast-paced world. I found this book presents a unique perspective on the problem of time management, emphasising the idea that life is finite and that it is impossible to accomplish all the things we want. Instead of striving for impossible goals, Burkeman suggests that we should focus on spending our time on things that bring us joy and fulfilment.
The author’s writing style is engaging and so utterly thought-provoking, making the book a pure joy to read. Despite mixed reviews, I found the book to be both practical and philosophical, providing valuable insights on how to find clarity and purpose in life.
Four Thousand Weeks is filled with insights on what it means to be productive in today’s world and challenges our preconceptions about time management. It highlights the unrealistic expectations that many of us have for ourselves and others, and encourages us all to embrace the limits of our lives and to focus on what truly matters.
Unlike other self-help books, “Four Thousand Weeks” did not leave any feelings of anxiety or pressure to hack my life to become more efficient. Instead, it offers really practical advice on working with the time we have and being mindful of the choices we make in how we use our time.
For me, it really hit home when contemplating how crazy our thinking (and understanding) really is about T I M E and then how we are attempting to maximising parts of our lives by hacking our time. – what does that even mean.
I mean take it from a guy who would praise his diary management skills for living out the corporate dream in London. Monday through Friday I was that guy who would attend meetings at anytime and anywhere across the UK in order to put a project together. I would tell myself that this approach would ‘maximise my time‘ in the long run and yet despite my exhaustion from the daily grind, I would still find time to jet off to a different European city every week. Yes every week. And yes I did this for years. (And at the time loved it. even if i was shattered taking videos and photos to hopefully live out the memories properly at a later and future date.)
While times have somewhat changed, I can see and reflect now with joy on how this book present how that same thinking still creeps in to my day to day life. Beating myself up with unrealistic expectations on my skills and ability to bring results in the short term through unrealistic deadlines.
Overall, the book presents a unique and thought-provoking perspective on time management that may be liberating and life-changing for those who can relate to its ideas. However, it may not be for everyone, especially those looking for traditional time management strategies or those motivated by pursuing worthwhile social initiatives

James Hollis recommends asking of every significant decision in life: “Does this choice diminish me, or enlarge me?” The question circumvents the urge to make decisions in the service of alleviating anxiety and instead helps you make contact with your deeper intentions for your time. If you’re trying to decide whether to leave a given job or relationship, say, or to redouble your commitment to it, asking what would make you happiest is likely to lure you toward the most comfortable option, or else leave you paralyzed by indecision. But you usually know, intuitively, whether remaining in a relationship or job would present the kind of challenges that will help you grow as a person (enlargement) or the kind that will cause your soul to shrivel with every passing week (diminishment). Choose uncomfortable enlargement over comfortable diminishment whenever you can.”
