Capturing Motion in Stillness – The Streets of Amsterdam

The idea here was born from an attempt to capture more than just a moment in time-seeking to blend the iconic imagery of Amsterdam with the abstract techniques we had been experimenting with in previous projects in the studio. After working on the abstraction of letters, numbers & icons, we wondered if we could apply a similar deconstruction to images rather than creating traditional videos or vlogs. The question was: how much could we capture in a single frame?

We began by shooting the vibrant streets of Amsterdam, taking two distinct images and breaking them down into their visual components before reassembling them into a single composition. The result was crude yet it provided a powerful reality. of something we had been toying with for a while but coluldn’t. quite place. A collage of motion and stillness combined in a single frame. This initial experiment laid the groundwork for a broader exploration into how we record and reconstruct our daily lives, both visually and digitally and so if you’re reading this, then please be sure to click though this entire project.

While the output from this experiment wasn’t refined, it was a key step in developing the techniques and ideas that would drive this larger project forward. It helped us understand how to manipulate the visual narrative of a day, offering a fragmented yet comprehensive glimpse into life’s fleeting moments. Through this process, we began to blur the lines between a single moment and a sequence of events, inviting viewers to see time and space differently within a static frame. A frame which is utterly unique but also fundamentally familiar.
