Deconstructing Currency:
Revisiting the Dollar Symbol ($)

PROJECT 2v4

In an earlier phase of this project, we explored the abstraction of numbers and ventured into the deconstruction of global currency symbols such as (£, $, ¥). However, as we continued our examination of symbols like the ampersand (“&”) and the “@” symbol, it became clear that the dollar symbol ($) deserved closer attention due to its dominance in global economics.

The USD ($) symbol is more than a representation of currency: it’s a powerful global icon, instantly recognisable and laden with meaning. The dollar’s value fluctuates, but the symbol itself transcends borders, becoming almost a universal shorthand for wealth, power, and commerce. And yet, like other currencies, the value it represents is an abstraction, tied to context, time, and geography.

In this part of the project, we revisited the dollar symbol, deconstructing it and reconstructing it into familiar new forms. Through this process, we explored how a simple symbol -one so familiar – can shift in meaning when broken apart and reshaped. The dollar’s dominance in the world economy makes it a fitting subject for this deeper exploration of how symbols represent and distort value.
