Deconstructing Numbers – A Simplified Approach to Form and Meaning

Building on the techniques we explored in previous projects, where we deconstructed and reconstructed images of prominent figures like Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., JFK, and Barack Obama, we’ve noticed that simple geometric shapes-circles, squares, and triangles-became central to the visual language we were creating. In this next phase, we extend this approach to a old subject: Numbers.

After perviously experimenting with more complex deconstructions, we decided to simplify our method by focusing on the basic number sequence from 0 to 9. We began by deconstructing each number at a 45° angle, slicing them diagonally from corner to corner. This technique allowed us to break down the familiar numeric forms into two distinct halves, which we then reassembled into hybrid forms.

The results were striking-while still recognisable as numbers, the reassembled forms took on entirely new dimensions. The possible combinations of these fragments produced shapes that were both abstract and familiar, inviting viewers to engage with the deeper symbolic meaning behind these most basic forms of communication.

This work follows the same creative process that guided our previous explorations-taking familiar symbols and transforming them through deconstruction and reconstruction. Much like how simplicity in geometric shapes revealed complex interactions, this project highlights how even basic numbers can evolve into something visually rich and abstract when their traditional boundaries are challenged.
