Deconstructing Numbers: From 0 to 9 (pt7)

P2v8

We’ve continue to focus exclusively on numbers themselves-the foundational symbols of our numeric system. In this earlier phase, we turned our attention to the sequence 0 through 9, deconstructing and reconstructing these numerals in various ways to explore how they could be transformed, while still retaining their core identity.

Using different methods, we would break each number down, sometimes splitting them into halves, thirds, or even fifths. In some compositions, the top and bottom halves of a number would be reassembled, creating a familiar yet altered form. In other instances, more complex patterns emerged as we experimented with layering and fragmenting the numerals further. The aim was to challenge the simplicity of these symbols, showing how something as basic as a number can be reimagined into abstract forms while still conveying its essence.

This process of breaking apart and rebuilding the numbers became a foundation for understanding how symbols-both numeric and alphabetic-can shift in meaning when their structure is altered. It also set the stage for our later work with license plates, where we applied similar deconstruction techniques to the typography of letters and numbers.

By deconstructing the number sequence and reconstructing it in unfamiliar ways, we sought to examine the balance between recognition and abstraction. This project raised questions about how we interpret symbols in their altered states, pushing the boundaries of what makes a number recognisable, and revealing the flexibility within these basic forms.
