Deconstructing Vowels – The Building Blocks of Language

After our exploration of the letter “A,” we shifted our focus to the core elements of the English language: the vowels, AEIOU. It’s often said that every word contains a vowel, making these five letters fundamental to communication. These symbols are the building blocks from which words and language are constructed, and in this project, we sought to break them down and reconstruct them to reveal new shapes and forms.

We approached each vowel as both a visual and symbolic entity. Just as we did with the letter “A,” we deconstructed AEIOU, fragmenting them into their basic forms. By reassembling these fragments in abstract configurations, we created new, unfamiliar versions of the familiar letters. These reconstructed vowels, while no longer immediately recognisable as their original forms, still carry the essence of their role in language. They exist in a space that feels simultaneously familiar and foreign, much like the fractured nature of communication itself.

This project highlights the complexity embedded in even the most basic components of language. By breaking down the letters that form the foundation of nearly every word in English, we invite viewers to reconsider their relationship with the symbols they use every day. These new forms challenge the viewer’s perception of language, showing how something as simple as a vowel can be reimagined into an entirely new visual narrative.
