Fragmenting Amsterdam: A Visual Exploration of the Eye and the City

This project began with a simple idea: to capture more than just a moment in time by blending iconic imagery of Amsterdam with abstract techniques developed in the studio. Our initial experiment focused on the city’s architecture, where we deconstructed and reassembled images of the vibrant houses lining the streets, creating a collage of motion and stillness within a single frame. This exploration led us to question how much we could capture in one static image, inviting viewers to reconsider their perception of time and space.

Returning to this project, we shifted our focus to the Adam Tower -the iconic modern building on the IJ waterfront in Amsterdam. Over a series of the day, we captured multiple images of the Ij and Tower from the same view point. These images were then broken down into smaller fragments and reassembled to create new compositions. The same process that we applied to the houses now transformed the Ij, revealing an abstract representation of the waterway and ever-changing relationship with its environment.

While the concept remains simple-taking a familiar image, deconstructing it, and recomposing it into something new-the results are intriguing. Each reconstructed image blends different moments in time, offering a fragmented yet cohesive glimpse into the subject. In doing so, we create a dialogue between the static architecture of the Tower and the fluid nature of time. The project encourages the viewer to pause and explore how multiple perspectives and moments can coexist within a single frame, much like the layered experiences we have within a city.

This project builds on the groundwork of our earlier explorations of Amsterdam’s houses but now focuses on the Adam Tower, a modern symbol of the city. Through this lens, we continue to blur the lines between motion and stillness, inviting viewers to reflect on the multiplicity of perspectives that shape our understanding of familiar landmarks.
