Fragmenting Language – Deconstructing the fundamentals: A

P18v4

Building on our exploration of binary states and the blurred space between zero and one, we turned our focus to the world of letters-specifically the letter “A,” one of the most fundamental symbols in the alphabet. Just as we deconstructed and reassembled binary numerals to explore the “in-between” of zero and one, here we applied the same process to typography. The letter “A,” when broken down and reassembled, became a canvas for exploring variations within a fixed symbol.

In this project, we began by selecting one of the most popular fonts of the day and deconstructing the letter “A” into its basic shapes. We then reassembled these fragments, mixing and altering their forms to create new, abstract versions of the same letter. Unlike how fonts are usually designed with an emotional or commercial intention-whether in advertisements, branding, or digital design-these disjointed letters carry no emotional attachment or underlying message. They simply exist as variations of “A,” stripped of the associations that advertisers and designers typically embed into their typefaces.

Through this process, we push the boundaries of what is recognizable. Just as we questioned the rigid duality of binary in the Between Zero and One project, here we challenge the conventional understanding of letters. What happens when a single, familiar character is cut up and reconstructed into something that feels both familiar and alien? The viewer may recognize the “A,” but its fractured form disrupts the smooth narrative of communication.

This work invites reflection on how deeply embedded symbols like letters and fonts carry meaning, even when they’re stripped of their intended context. By deconstructing the letter “A” and reimagining it through disjointed forms, we reveal the hidden complexity behind the simple act of reading, writing, and seeing. a natural and progressive next step might be to consider A-Z again as we weren’t convinced the first time.
