My journey has led me to the heart of Malealea, a place that truly embodies the magic of this mountainous kingdom and what better place to stay than Malealea Lodge.
Discovering Malealea: A Journey Through Lesotho
After my adventurous journey into Lesotho (Lesotho, Crossing into the Unknown), I was eager to dive deeper into this enchanting and tiny country. Known as the “Kingdom in the Sky,” Lesotho is a landlocked jewel within South Africa, offering a rugged landscape that promises both challenge and beauty and not yet economically or socially. I remember first. noticing it’s borders during a year 8 geography lesson and thinking to myself, “what is going on there.”
A Warm Welcome
Arriving at Malealea Lodge felt like stepping into another world. After the arduous crossing through the Gates of Paradise pass, the lodge, nestled in the Makhomalong Valley and surrounded by the Maloti Mountains, was a refreshing oasis. The lodge’s charm is complemented by the community-focused Malealea Trust, which supports local education and businesses.

Yet, what truly captured my awe was the night sky. With our high altitude and the absence of light pollution, the stars were breathtaking. As I lay on my sleeping bag, watching shooting stars streak across the sky, I marvelled at the serendipity of my presence in such a magical place. A place that could be pretty much anywhere on this tiny rock orbiting its closest star. a rock we call home. HelloEarth

Exploring Malealea: Connections and Reflections
The next morning, I joined a guided hike to Botsoela Falls and the Bushmen Caves. Though I usually prefer to explore solo, the lodge’s commitment to the local community encouraged me to hire a guide. The easy hike allowed for deep conversations and reflections on life. midway before our first view point, a surprising connection emerged during our chat: both my guide and I had preauricular pits-tiny ear holes with roots tracing back to fish gills affecting about 1% of the population. Despite the vast distance and time separating our ancestries, this shared trait was a remarkable reminder of our common evolutionary heritage.
Our hike continued on to Botsoela Falls. We continued upwards and exerted a little extra effort to reach the top, and when we did, it was utterly stunning. We had the world to ourselves and I found myself laying on the floor, in the heart of Lesotho, contemplating the joys of life.

Reflections and Takeaways
My stay at Malealea Lodge was a profound experience. The starlit sky and the unexpected genetic connection with my guide made me reflect on the randomness of the universe and our shared humanity. These moments of connection and wonder will remain with me, a reminder of the beauty and unpredictability of life on the road. Though I may not return, the magic of Malealea and its people will forever be etched in my memory. Thank you, Malealea.
