A Day in the Life: Relaxing at Mayoka Village and Nkhata Bay

Morning Bliss
Waking up after a blissful sleep at Mayoka Village (even in the dorm) meant greeting the dawning sun and crisp morning air with a view over Lake Malawi. The village’s hillside location required navigating a few steep and uneven steps, but the effort was worth it for the breathtaking panorama once you reached the lakeside. We took our stand-up paddleboards into the bay and sat in silence as the sun rose-truly and utterly remarkable. It was then time for some breakfast.
Breakfast at Mayoka Village was a treat-suddenly, my adventure felt like a holiday. Maybe I was taking a break from the adventure; either way, the fresh fruit, homemade bread, and delicious coffee made me feel incredibly comfortable. Over a leisurely meal, we reviewed our plans for the day-oh wait, we had none! The resort offered a free boat trip to play games on a local beach and do some cliff jumping before snorkeling. It sounded like fun, so we signed up. The resort’s restaurant and bar, known for its daily specials and homemade goodies, provided everything from hearty meals to vegetarian options. But the best was the Friday BBQ buffet. I really was on holiday.
Exploring Nkhata Bay
After breakfast, but before the beach trip, we decided to explore Nkhata Bay. The town itself is a vibrant mix of activity and charm. We strolled slowly through the markets and tiny shops. I had a craving for something sweet and had noticed a large shop in the town center when we arrived late the night before. it didn’t have what i wanted in the end and so i opted for some fresh bread and presented it was an ice bun from Simmons in St Albans.

Back at Mayoka Village, the day’s activities were about to begin. I ordered a cold Coke from the bar and joined the mix of backpackers, adventurers, and couples who had decided to make this their base for the next few days. We hopped into the boat and sped out over the tranquil, clear water. The scenery was picturesque. With fish eagles soaring above and the promise of exhilarating cliff jumping later, I knew this was going to be a day to remember. I always have this thought when I get up before sunrise and watch the earth slowly rotate, allowing the sun to appear as if it were moving. The friendly staff made the experience unforgettable, adding to the natural beauty of the area. This was a stark contrast to the hustle of the road and the national parks-this truly felt like a holiday. wait am i allow to be on holiday when on an adventure?
Evening Entertainment
As the sun began to set, we returned to the bar, picked out a random board game, and watched as the sun dipped behind the hilly landscape. It wasn’t long before the stars came out, and the embers of the BBQ teased my taste buds with irresistible seasoning which till this day i don’t know what it was. Delicious! All of this was washed down with a cold beer as we gazed at the Milky Way and a trillion twinkling stars overhead.
