The Descent from Mount Mulanje: An Unexpected Challenge
After an exhilarating two-day hike up Mount Mulanje, we finally reached the main road by CCAP Likhubula House. With our belongings stored 12 kilometers away in Mulanje town and our energy reserves depleted, we decided to indulge in a bit of local convenience: bike taxis.

Our initial excitement quickly faced a reality check when the first bike taxi driver took one look at me and said, “No way. You’re too big and too heavy.” Undeterred, a younger, more determined driver stepped up, eager to take on the challenge. We all piled into our respective bike taxis, and off we went.

The journey started smoothly on the mostly flat road, but as soon as we encountered even the slightest incline, it became clear that my driver might have underestimated the difficulty of carrying me up the hill. We fell noticeably behind the others, and the situation soon turned from a minor inconvenience into a real problem.
Exhausted and unwilling to pedal myself, I realised that if I didn’t pitch in, we might not make it back in time. So, I made a quick decision. I hopped off the bike, gave my driver a break, and told him to switch seats-he was in for an unexpected free ride! I took over the cycling, and despite the fatigue, managed to pedal us back to Mulanje.

Arriving at Mulanje town, I paid the bike taxi drivers for their efforts, expressing my gratitude for their perseverance. That night, I celebrated the end of our adventure with a hearty meal, completely worn out but satisfied with our day’s journey.
