PROJECT 1v5

Subject becomes Source

Voices of Connection: AMS is a collaborative project that seeks to amplify the voices of vulnerable individuals across Amsterdam. The goal is not only to document their stories but to allow them to reclaim and co-create their own narratives through photography, storytelling, and audio recordings. By giving them the tools to share their experiences from their own perspectives, the project hopes to break down barriers of misunderstanding and build empathy.

One key aspect of this project is Giving Them the Camera, where participants are provided with cameras-whether disposable or digital modules like the ESP32-to document their world as they see it. For an hour or so, they capture whatever moments, scenes, or objects resonate with them. There are no restrictions; participants are free to frame their realities however they choose.

This approach allows viewers to gain an unfiltered, intimate look into the lives of those often marginalised, offering a glimpse of their world through their own eyes. It challenges the traditional roles of observer and observed, turning participants into active storytellers. By seeing life from their perspective, we are forced to rethink our assumptions about those living on the streets, engaging with their experiences in a more nuanced, humanised way.
