Fragmenting Expression – Reconstructing Eyes and Mouths in Online Portraits

8v2

In this part of the project, we expanded our focus to alter both the eyes and the mouth-two of the most expressive features of the human face. Using portraits of strangers found online, we replaced these key elements while leaving the rest of the face untouched. The result is a striking blend of familiarity and distortion, where the essence of the subject is subtly but powerfully altered.

The eyes and mouth are central to how we perceive emotion and identity. By changing both features, we create a deeper sense of displacement. While the face remains mostly recognisable, these shifts challenge our instinctive connection with the subject, making the familiar feel uncanny. The viewer is left with an altered portrait that feels both familiar and unsettling, prompting reflection on how even small changes can reshape our perception of identity.

This project reflects the growing ease with which we manipulate digital images and how these changes influence the way we see ourselves and others in a world increasingly shaped by visual distortion.
