Building on the success of our previous work with vowels, we set out on a more ambitious project: to explore all 26 letters of the Latin alphabet. In this phase, we created an environment where each letter could be broken down into its fundamental elements and reassembled using fragments from other letters. The combinational possibilities were vast, leading to entirely new, abstract forms-letters that share commonalities with others but exist as unique creations.
As we embarked on this project, we considered the fascinating historical evolution of the Latin alphabet. The letters we use today are the result of an ancient lineage: the Latin alphabet evolved from the Etruscan alphabet, which itself derived from the Cumaean Greek version of the Greek alphabet. The Greek script descended from the Phoenician alphabet, which was, in turn, influenced by Egyptian hieroglyphs. This historical thread connects our modern alphabet to ancient systems of writing, symbolizing the continuity of human expression across time and cultures.
However, this exploration is not just about history. There’s also an intriguing notion that the shapes of letters can be traced back to the stars. As ancient civilizations looked to the heavens, they drew connections between the celestial patterns and the symbols they inscribed. The lines and shapes that form our letters may echo the constellations that have guided humanity for millennia, reflecting a shared geometry between the cosmos and the symbols we use to communicate.
In this project, we take this idea further. By deconstructing the letters of the Latin alphabet and reconstructing them into new forms, we are rediscovering these underlying geometries. Just as the Latin alphabet evolved through a series of transformations from one writing system to another, we are evolving these letters into new visual expressions. The forms we create are not random-they emerge from a shared structure that links all letters together, much like stars in a constellation.
Through this process, we invite viewers to reconsider the alphabet as more than just a tool of communication. These letters, with their ancient origins, are symbols of something much larger. They reflect the structures that govern both the physical and symbolic worlds, hinting at a cosmic connection. By reimagining the alphabet in this way, we offer a new perspective-one that bridges the historical evolution of language with the abstract beauty of the stars.
