Numbers:
Constructed, Deconstructed, and Reconstructed
Numbers have always intrigued me, offering a freedom of expression that words couldn’t. I’ve always felt more comfortable communicating through numerals (0-9) over letters (a-z) . This inclination, at school, drew me to explore fields like engineering, architecture, and computer science. But as the digital revolution unfolded in to the hands of the consumer, my focus shifted toward the world of code and the digitisation of our physical reality. For I was working for Canon where everything is reduced to binary, the fundamental system of 0s and 1s focuses on to a CCD. But this series isn’t about binary or simple decimal reduction.
In Numbers Constructed, Deconstructed, and Reconstructed, we delve deeper into numbers themselves specifically the digits 0 through 9, which form the world’s only universal language. The question arose: What happens when we deconstruct these basic symbols and reconstruct them into new, unfamiliar forms? This work explores that transformation, where the familiar becomes unrecognisable, yet remains strangely known as it pushes toward abstraction. Through this process, we aim to challenge our perception of numbers and their symbolic power, offering a visual narrative that redefines the meaning of these fundamental units of the essence of the modern world.
