Dunwich Dynamo, 2012 Vlog

The Dunwich Dynamo is a 200km night ride from London to the lost city of Dunwich on the Suffolk Coast.

From 1992 to 1998, it ran as a commercial pay-to-enter event. In 1999, it became free-just turn up and ride. This successful format has continued since 2000. Setting a date for an informal ‘turn-up-and-ride’ event-on the Saturday night nearest the full moon in July-preserves the most important element of the event: the company of other riders.

This year, I joined hundreds of fellow cyclists under the glow of the full moon, embarking on a journey that combines camaraderie, challenge, and the pure joy of cycling. The Dunwich Dynamo isn’t just a ride; it’s an experience that brings together riders of all levels to share the thrill of cycling through the night.

As we pedaled away from the bustling streets of London, the city’s lights faded, giving way to the serene countryside. The sense of community was palpable, with riders supporting and encouraging each other along the way. Despite the darkness, the route was illuminated by the collective spirit and determination of everyone involved.

The ride was filled with unforgettable moments-from quiet, reflective stretches under the stars to lively rest stops buzzing with energy. The final approach to Dunwich at dawn was particularly magical, as the first light of day revealed the stunning Suffolk coastline, making every KM worth the effort. I’d long lost my original mates from the start, with some spuring ahead due to their experience & fitness and others stopping to enjoy a more social ride.
